As the mustard seed in the gospel grown in to a full shrub where her shade gives to the birds and a shelter for them and food for the needy, Holy Cross College after 80 years of her humble beginning is the same as the mustard to the society of today. It was started in 1924 March 10th with 7 pupils at the premises of Holy Cross Church in Gampaha in the heart of the town where the railway station and the main bus stand is situated. Veteran missionary Father Gregorius Silva who has completed the rocky building of the church in May 1916, knew the signs of the time and was aware of the need of the time and started this school under the leadership of a lay person Mrs. Francis Perera, as the 1st Principal. Among the 1st pupils there was one boy & six girls. The boy became a priest & the one girls among them became a nun in the holy family convent. Gradually the numbers in the school went up to over 100 students under Principinleship of Mrs. Fracis Perera. The humility and the faith in God’s providential care of the sisters has managed to provide sufficiently. Rev. Sr. Euphemia A.C. The Principal then was an unshakable rock of faith in God’s love and providence who had to take the stern decision with the provincial superior of keeping the school under its management without handing over to the government The golden era of the school started with the principal ship of Sr. Nellie Helen A.C. who was appointed on 16-09-1974 and unbroken 32 years as principal and with 3 years as a teacher till 11th June 2002. Today the number of students passing from the school is 3,300 about.
